Bomb Squad Called to Carleton Campus; Undetonated WWII-Era Artillery Shells Found

Northfield Police Sgt. Scott Johnson said the shells were about 6 ½-inches long and were removed without incident Wednesday evening.

The Bloomington Bomb Squad was called to on Wednesday after a box containing two undetonated WWII-era artillery shells was found in the college’s archives.

The bomb squad X-rayed the shells on campus and they turned out to be completely inert, Johnson said.

“It’s better to be safe than sorry,” he said. “It was much to ado about nothing.”

Johnson said the shells had been stored in the archives for about a decade.

Eric Sieger, director of media relations for Carleton, said the box, which was found in the Dacie Moses House on Union Street, was accompanied by letters that appear to date the shells, according to a Northfield News report.
