A first-ever Northfield Summer Film Festival will be held on successive Tuesday evenings, at 7:30, beginning July 10.
In a collaboration between and the Cannon Valley Elder Collegium (CVEC), four films with the general theme of “Awakenings” will be shown at Carleton’s Cinema:
- July 10: Groundhog Day (US, 1993)
- July 17: After Life (Japan, 1998)
- July 24: The Crying Game (Ireland, 1992)
- July 31: Local Hero (Scotland, 1983)
The showings are free and open to the public. Further details can be found on the Collegium website, cvec.org.

Connected with the festival, the Collegium will also sponsor a series of discussions. Led by St. Olaf and Carleton faculty with particular expertise on each of the films, the 4-discussion series will be open to any community member at a one-time cost of $25. Discussions will take place from 9:30-11:30 a.m. on the day after each film, at a location to be announced. To register for the series, go to the Collegium website cvec.org or stop at the table at the July 10 showing. Collegium members who have attended similar post-showing discussions of provocative films in the past say this has greatly added to their appreciation of the films, and recommend this as a worthwhile add-on.
