Surfacing Exhibition at Northfield Arts Guild

Northfielder Carolyn Hartwell paints abstract landscapes.  Often working in series, Carloyn varies the formal aspects of her oil paintings to determine both the overall narrative and emotional content in each work.  She states, “Certain passages must be coaxed out to play a more dominant role while other elements must be muted lest they smother the rest.”  Carolyn received her BA from Parsons New School in New York City, continued her studies with Parsons in Paris, and attended The School of the Visual Arts in New York.  She has shown work in Paris and Minneapolis, including solo shows at the Icebox and Ruff Galleries.

Paul Brokken is an oil painter who strives to capture the form of his unconscious.  “My work is the result of a constant dialogue within this hauntingly beautiful Realm...  The process is a walk through the unknown and requires losing of one’s habitual self.”  Paul adds clove oil to his paint to slow the drying so that he can work on canvases for up to a year.  Paul received his BFA and MFA from the University of Minnesota.  He returned to his roots in southeast Minnesota to start a family.  Paul is a Duluth native, but has lived and painted in London, Paris, and New York.  Paul has exhibited work in New York City, South Dakota, and Minnesota.

Juliane Shibata is a sculptural clay artist who works mainly in porcelain.  After traveling to Jingdezhen, China this summer, she became interested in painting on the surface of her work.  In this show, Juliane explores how two-dimensional paintings merge with glazed, three-dimensional forms.  Juliane received her MFA in Ceramics from Bowling Green State University and a BA in Studio Art from Carleton College.  Juliane taught at Bowling Green State University, Tennessee Tech University, Hope College, and Carleton College.  She has been an artist in residence at Ox-Bow, the Appalachian Center for Craft in Tennessee, and The Pottery Workshop in Jingdezhen, China.  Juliane has shown work nationally and internationally.

The Northfield Arts Guild Gallery hours are Monday through Friday 10am – 5pm and Saturday 10am – 3pm.
