Hydrant Flushing on the Horizon

The city plans to flush out water mains in early October.

Residents take note. In about a month, the city will conduct its annual purge of the hydrant system.

Beginning on Oct. 6, water mains in Northfield will be flushed between the hours of 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. The operation will conclude at 6 a.m. on Thursday, Oct. 10. Routine flushing keeps mineral accumulations in check and also alerts the city to possible operational flaws.

Unfortunately, in the short-term, flushing can cause water to become discolored and rusty. Residents are advised to limit water use and check the clarity of the water before putting in a load of laundry. The city will have special soap on hand at city hall for those who end up with rust-colored clothing. For best results, keep the stained clothing wet until the soap can be obtained.
