Massage Business Expanding to Northfield

Cannon Falls' Spa Schwa will offer services in Northfield starting in July.

Starting in July, Northfielders will have the opportunity to receive Maya abdominal therapy on Division Street.

"It's a tradition that has been passed along from Central America," said Tara Schwagmeyer, who's bringing her Cannon Falls business to Northfield on Mondays in July and August and then expanding to two days a week in September.

Schwagmeyer is a certified massage therapist, Maya abdominal therapist and Flower Essence practitioner. She has been practicing massage therapy for 12 years and is a member of the American Massage Therapy Association.

Her business is called Spa Schwa and will share space on the third floor in the Nutting Block building at 220 Division St. Schwagmeyer services are used for people who have reproductive health concerns, menstruation challenges, bladder conditions, digestive issues, chronic and acute muscle tightness, stress and headaches.

"Your whole belly is your motor," Schwagmeyer said. When something is out of place—organs can shift—then it affects other functions of the body.

She also works on people suffering from Carpal Tunnel Syndrome.

Schwagmeyer said Maya abdominal massage can help realign organs and help them work better. The uterus, for example, can be affected by the liver and kidney because they produce hormones that tells the body to get pregnant, Schwagmeyer said.

She said she's had several success stories of helping women get pregnant and have easier pregnancies who had previously been told they were infertile. The massage is paired with other exercises and diet changes.

An expansion to Northfield made sense for several reasons, Schwagmeyer said.

Schwagmeyer, who lives halfway between Northfield and Cannon Falls, said she has several clients who travel to Cannon Falls for her therapy. She also said it made sense because delivers babies and has the .

Eventually Schwagmeyer would like to expand Spa Schwa to Northfield full time and partner with her friend, Jennifer Schlaak, to open a center for massage therapy, Yoga training and classes. The space Schwagmeyer is using on the Nutting Block is currently used by Schlaak for massage therapy.

Schwagmeyer is hosting a free class from 6:30-8 p.m. on Tuesday, June 19, at . She'll discuss the benefits of abdominal massage and how it helps with infertility and making pregnant women feel comfortable. You can sign up at http://justfood.coop/news/.
