Holiday hiring is off to a record start in the retail industry, one report says.

Retailers added 214,500 workers in October, the most ever added that month since the Bureau of Labor Statistics started keeping track in 1939, according to outplacement firm Challenger Gray & Christmas Inc.

But that doesn’t necessarily mean the strong numbers will continue.

“The last couple of years has seen strong retail employment gains in October, followed by weaker gains in November,” Challenger, Gray & Christmas CEO John A. Challenger said in a press release.

“The data suggest that retailers have moved up their hiring schedule in recent years, adding more workers in late September and early October.”

• Nurse Practitoner Needed for Special Assignment: “Opportunity to make extra money before the holiday season. If you are selected for this position you will begin immediately upon completion of credentialing.”
• Seasonal Warehouse Clerks: “Pro Staff currently has several positions available for seasonal warehouse clerks. This position consists of picking and packing orders and getting orders ready for shipment. The opportunity is temporary through the holiday season and is a great way to earn extra cash quickly.”
