Oakdale police at about 1:15 p.m. were flagged down by a Mills Fleet Farm employee, who said a man fled in a Ford Bronco after he confronted him about stealing ammunition, according to the complaint.

After initiating a traffic stop, police noticed boxes of ammunition in plain view, along with a large black duffel bag behind the driver’s seat, according to the criminal complaint. The driver, identified as McPhillips, was arrested and the vehicle was searched.

The bag contained a guitar case, in which police found the altered weapon, along with another 12-guage shotgun in a metal lox box, according to the complaint.

McPhillips in 2005 was convicted of aiding and abetting burglary, which makes him ineligible to possess a firearm, the complaint says.

If convicted on both counts, he faces up to 20 years in prison and $40,000 in fines.
