It is known as the “Grandparents Scam.”

The scammer contacts the victim via phone and/or email and claims to be stranded, injured or in jail in another country and in need of emergency funds.

What to look for:

  • A phone call claiming to be about or from a grandchild or other family member in distress.
  • An urgent need for money to be secretly wire transferred, often to a foreign country.

People should verify a caller’s identity and resist pressure to act, and contact a family member who could confirm the story

Also, people can try to trace the call by dialing *57 after hanging up.
