Dignitaries Expected at Today's Wal-Mart Store Groundbreaking in Roseville

The discounter intends to build a 160,000 square-foot store.

Roseville Mayor Dan Roe is among dignitaries scheduled to participate in today's groundbreaking for a new 160,000-square-foot Wal-Mart supercenter at County Road C and Cleveland.

Other officials slated to offer brief remarks at the 11:30 a.m. ceremony include a Wal-Mart executive and Tim Roche, CEO of the Twin Cities North Chamber of Commerce.

Wal-Mart last month completed a deal to a buy a 14-acre parcel  from Roseville Properties Management in the city's Twin Lakes neighborhood for the new store. Terms were not disclosed.

Plans for the Wal-Mart store have been more than a year in the making and the discounter's intentions have been met with mixed reaction from the community.

"Is it too late to protest Walmart coming to Roseville!," said Tony Nickelsen.
"What a huge mistake by our past and present council!"

But another Patch reader, Henry, said, " Hey, I am thrilled to have a "Wally World" in Roseville! I shop a lot at the SuperTarget in Roseville, but I am happy to have a Wal-Mart close to me. They have stuff I can't get any place else around here."
