Q&A: A Vet's Reflections

Harlan "Dutch" Smiedeberg, a member of Roseville's American Legion and VFW posts, talks about Memorial Day.

Monday is Memorial Day, a time for honoring those Americans who died while in the line of military service. 

Roseville Patch interviewed 78-year-old Harlan “Dutch” Schmiedeberg for his thoughts on the holiday. He is a member of the combined color guard from Rosetown American Legion Post 542 and VFW Post 7555, both veterans groups located in Roseville.  He resides in Arden Hills.

Roseville Patch: What did you do during your working career?

Schmiedeberg: I was a truck driver.

Roseville Patch: What branch of the service were you in and when?

Schmiedeberg: I was in the Army from 1955 to 1957, the post-Korean conflict. (He left the Army at the rank of corporal. )

Roseville Patch: How long have you been in the color guard?

Schmiedeberg:  About 11 years.

Roseville Patch: What is a favorite quote that you live by?

Schmiedeberg: Treat everybody with respect. That is kind of my motto.

Roseville Patch: Why do you serve in the color guard?

Schmiedeberg: It is a very good way to give back.

Roseville Patch:  What does Memorial Day mean to you?

Schmiedeberg: It is a great reminder of those who gave up their lives before us. This is a way to honor them.
