Roseville Council Names Trudgeon as Interim City Manager

Director of community development to temporarily take the helm while city search for permanent replacement to Malinen.

The Roseville City Council late Thursday afternoon unanimously appointed community development director Pat Trudgeon as interim city manager.

Trudgeon's appointment came at a special meeting, two days after six-year city veteran Bill Malinen resigned over what appeared to be differences in style.

In an interview with Patch, Mayor Dan Roe contended Malinen and the Council were not effectively working together. Both sides realized they were not "fitting together well," he said. "In the best interests of each other it made sense to part ways."

At Thursday's special meeting, Council members said any number of adminisrative department heads could serve as interim city manager. Other potential appointees included public works director Duane Schwartz, parks and recreation director Lonnie Brokke and and city Finance Director Chris Miller.

But utlimately Trudgeon's name surfaced first for discussion and then a vote by Council members.

Council member Jason Etten said he felt Trudgeon was an excellent choice for the interim manager post partly given his experience, which includes having erved on a city council. "I think he (Trudgeon) will work seamlessly with us," he said. "I think there is a lot of respect for hm on the staff."

After his appointment, Trudgeon told the Council members he appreciated their support and pledged to work together as a team.

Before joining Roseville, Trudgeon's career included serving as the planning and development director of North Branch, Minn., a City Council member in Beloit, Wis. and as a lobbyist in Wisconsin.

Meanwhile, Roseville Council members voiced hope to have a permanent successor to Malinen selected within six months.
