Roseville Police Issue Crime Alert: Mail Theft

Raising the "red flag" can alert more than the mail carrier you have posts to be picked up.

The Roseville Police Department today issued the following crime alert following a rash of mail box thefts:

"Since December 1, 2011, there have been eight reports of mail theft; seven occurring from residential mailboxes and one from an apartment building’s outgoing mail.

In all of the residential theft reports, residents placed mail in their mailboxes and used the red flag to indicate outgoing mail available to be picked up by their postal carrier.

Recommendations from the U.S. Postal Inspection Service

  • Use the letter slots at your post office to mail letters, or give them to a letter carrier.
  • Pick up your mail promptly after delivery. Don’t leave it in your mailbox overnight.
  • Don’t send cash in the mail.
  • Ask your bank for “secure” checks that can’t be altered.
  • Tell your post office when you’ll be out of town, so they can hold your mail until you return.

Report all mail theft to the Roseville Police Department (651.767.0640) and to a Postal Inspector (877.876.2455 or www.postalinspectors.uspis.gov)."
