Roseville Teacher Among People Appointed to Special State Committee

Dan Beck, from Roseville Area Middle School, among those named to new teacher evaluation panel.

Minnesota Department of Education Commissioner Brenda Cassellius on Monday appointed 35 members, including one Roseville teacher, to a panel charged with developing a new evaluation system for teachers in the state.

Cassellius' appointments to the Teacher Evaluation Working Group include Dan Beck, a Roseville Area Middle School social studies teacher and president of Education Minnesota Roseville.

Mandated by the Minnesota Legislature as part of the new teacher evaluation law passed during the 2011 special session, the Teacher Evaluation Working Group will develop an evaluation model to be used by school districts and teachers in the event they do not agree on a local evaluation model, the Education Department said in a statement.

“This task force has the opportunity to develop a rich and meaningful tool that will benefit students and assist teachers in their continued quest to become outstanding professional educators,” Cassellius said in a statement. “The work they will do takes on heightened importance in light of Minnesota’s achievement gap and the disparities that exist among our students."

The first meeting of the task force will be held from 4 to 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 13 at the Minnesota Department of Education in Conference Center A  in Roseville.
