Roseville Week in Review: June 19 edition

Roseville PD promotes two to lieutenants; District 623 superintendent vows a state shutdown won't close Roseville schools.

Here’s some of what’s made news in Roseville during the past week:

  • The state Dislocated Worker program has allocated  $200,000 to help  50 laid-off workers at Ultimate Electronics in Roseville and five other Twin Cities locations find new jobs.  That news came Monday in an announcement from the Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development. (DEED). http://patch.com/A-jswC.
  • Roseville High School’s Scott Allen has recently returned to his job as associate principal and athletic director after recuperating for about two months from a second go-around with heart bypass-related surgery. Allen, 46, was in St. Paul’s United Hospital for about three weeks in mid-March after surgery to replace an aortic valve that had been attacked by a staph infection, he said.  http://patch.com/A-jqJ2
  • Roseville Area senior Sam Matthew finished up the Class AAA state boys golf meet tied for 10th overall at Bunker Hills in Coon Rapids. Matthew finished the two-day tournament with a 149, good for a tie for 10th with four other golfers. The University of North Dakota recruit began the day after shooting a 73 during Tuesday’s first round. He followed it up with a 76 on Wednesday. http://patch.com/A-jwMq.
  • Neither rain, or snow, or a government shutdown will keep Roseville area students from their schools, Superintendent John Thein told the District 623 School Board Tuesday.  Thein said the schools will be open “no matter what,” that they won’t close if Gov. Mark Dayton and the Minnesota Legislature are unable to reach a compromise on the state budget. Thein noted that “even if the district receives no funding at all, we have enough reserves to get through summer school.” The district offers one of the largest summer school programs in the state, serving more than 4,000 students. http://patch.com/A-jvHT
  • Roseville Police Sgts. Scott Williams and Erika Scheider were promoted to the rank of lieutenant Thursday afternoon in the City Hall council chamber. Williams will assume control over the operations of the force’s 36 patrol officers, Police Chief Rick Mathwig said. Scheider will continue to lead Roseville’s investigative unit. http://patch.com/A-jzsn
  • Expect all-night work on the Rosedale Square Shopping Center parking lot starting June 20 after the Roseville City Council this week approved a variance for extended construction activity at the retail center. Minnetonka-based Welsh Companies requested the variance, which allows crews to put on an asphalt overlay on part of the parking lot between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m. some time between June 20 and June 30. The work is expected to be completed with in a couple days, weather permitting, according to a city staff report. http://patch.com/A-jwMv.
