Roseville Week in Review: June 26 edition

From meetings of the City Council and School Board to the kick off of Rosefest, Roseville had a busy week.

Here’s some of what’s made news in Roseville during the past week:

  • Community leaders and citizens from Roseville and neighboring communities on Tuesday evening resumed their work on developing an area-wide program that supports military service members and their families. The initiative, known as Beyond The Yellow Ribbon, is aimed at connecting service members and their families with community support, training, services and resources, according to First Lieutenant Kathryn Helland, a Yellow Ribbon Outreach Coordinator with the Minnesota National Guard. http://patch.com/A-j40P
  • Almost 70 percent of Roseville residents said they would or might vote for a tax increase to fund improvements to the city’s parks, according to a random survey of 760 Roseville residents conducted by Leisure Vision, a Kansas City-based research firm. Ron Vine, the president of Leisure Vision, presented the results of the survey in a conference call to the Roseville Council Monday evening.
The survey showed popular support for at least some level of tax increase in exchange for increased services. http://patch.com/A-j4zy
  • Rosefest, Roseville’s annual summer festival, began its 10-day run Saturday with a “Run/Roll for the Roses,’’ 5K and10K races for able-bodied runners and wheelchair participants. The festival concludes on July 4 with a day of games, concessions and entertainment at Central Park at Lexington Avenue. A  fireworks show is set for 10 p.m. over Bennett Lake. http://patch.com/A-j9Zm
  • If the state government shuts down, that won’t stop the Roseville License Center. “In anticipation of the state shutdown, the Roseville License Center staff ordered extra supplies and conducted preventive maintenance,’’ city spokeswoman Carolyn Curti said in a statement Thursday. “They will be able to provide motor vehicle titles and registrations and driver’s license renewals. Passport services will also be available if there is a shutdown.” http://patch.com/A-j8h3
  • The Roseville School District should not conduct a levy referendum this fall, school board members agreed at a planning session Tuesday. Superintendent John Thein has recommended the board wait until the fall of 2013 – when the current levy expires – to even consider recommending another. “The most we could raise in a referendum this fall would be $315, 000,” Thein said, adding that the amount would be insufficient to make a major difference in district operations. http://patch.com/A-j6vP
  • The Rosetown Legion baseball team  improved its record  to 3-4 with a 2-1 win Thursday night over Hamline Red at Midway Stadium.  http://patch.com/A-jBFD
