Spotlight on Business: John's Tailors Cut from a Different Cloth

The Roseville shop's customers have ranged from CEOs and local celebrities to movie stars.

In a world of cookie-cutter clothes, John's Tailors stands out in the retail crowd.

Since its founding in 1981, the Roseville tailoring shop has stitched its niche as a maker of custom suits for men and women and hand-made shirts along with handling clothing alterations and selling clothing accessories.

And it's a business that attracts a wide line of customers, from CEOs to celebrities, said shop owner Nadir John.  Prices for custom-made suits range from $1,200 to $2,600, depending on the fabric.

Some of John's notable customers include Kevin McHale, former NBA baketball star and now a professional coach. "We do his shirts and suits for him (McHale)," John said.

John said his shop has, in years past, also made custom clothes for movie stars who have been in the Twin Cities to shoot films. They include Arnold Schwartzennegger for "Jingle All The Way" and Walter Mathieu and Jack Lemmon for the Grumpy Old Men movies.

The work at John's Tailors sets it apart from the field. "There are not that many people who do custom suits," he said. "We have customers from all over, even outside the state."

About 50 to 65 percent of the store's business is doing alterations withthe rest generating from custom-made clothes and sales of accessories such as ties, belts, cufflinks and suspenders.

John is originally from Midyat, Turkey and grew up in a family of tailors with a grandfather who was in the silk materials business.

Also on the staff of his Roseville store are his wife Zahura Can and master tailor Enver Ceric, who is originally from Bosnia.

Asked what he likes best about being a tailor, John said " I enjoy seeing people after I do their (clothing) work."
