“During the early morning hours of Sunday, August 7th, approximately 100 guests of the Roseville Residence Inn located at 2985 Centre Pointe Drive were evacuated from their rooms while SWAT negotiators attempted to make contact with a 34-year old St. Paul man who had barricaded himself in his room threatening suicide.

“This event began late Saturday night when Roseville Police received information that a 34-year old male was contemplating suicide at an area hotel.  Roseville officers began searching area hotels and eventually located this person’s auto at the Residence Inn.

“Prior to making contact with this person, officers learned this man had attempted suicide earlier in the week, had a military back ground, maybe in possession of weapons and was alleged to be suffering from post traumatic stress syndrome.

“When officers made contact with this man to check his welfare, he immediately became combative with police.  The suspect fought with officers before retreating to his hotel room where he barricaded his door to prevent entry.

“Uniformed officers were unsuccessful in negotiating this male’s peaceful surrender and requested the assistance of East Metro and Ramsey County SWAT.

“Based on information specific to the suspect possibly being in possession of weapons and as a precautionary measure, police evacuated 50 hotel rooms containing well over 100 guests to the

hotel’s breakfast lounge and metro transit buses.

"The standoff successfully ended at approximately 2 a.m. with the suspect’s peaceful surrender to authorities without further incident.  The suspect was transported by ambulance to an area hospital for treatment of what appear to be self-inflicted injuries and excessive alcohol consumption.

“One of the officers who had initial contact with the suspect was treated and released at Region’s Hospital with a minor arm injury.  Evacuated hotel guests were allowed to return to their rooms.

“This case is currently under investigation and will be reviewed by the Ramsey County Attorney’s Office for charging consideration at a later date.”
