Federal Judge Accepts Derek Chauvin's Plea Deal
Former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin pleaded guilty to violating George Floyd's civil rights in December.

ST. PAUL, MN — Derek Chauvin will serve between 20 and 25 years in prison after a judge accepted the former Minneapolis police officer's plea deal in the federal civil rights case against him.
Chauvin and three other former officers were charged with violating George Floyd's civil rights before his death on Memorial Day 2020.
Chauvin submitted his guilty plea to the judge in December. The other three opted to stand trial and were convicted by a federal jury in February.

Chauvin is already serving a 22 1/2 year sentence for his murder conviction in Floyd's death in state criminal court. However, he is appealing that conviction.
His federal sentence and the state sentence will run concurrently. A sentencing hearing has not been scheduled.

Alexander Kueng, Thomas Lane, and Tou Thao are all set to stand trial together in a state criminal case scheduled to begin on June 13. That trial will not be televised.
