Gov. Walz Declines U.S. Senate Bid, 'Not Ruling Out' Presidential Run
The decision not to run for U.S. Senate allows him to avoid a potentially awkward matchup against his lieutenant governor, Peggy Flanagan.

ST. PAUL, MN β Gov. Tim Walz will not run for Minnesota's open U.S. Senate seat in 2026. He is reportedly exploring a third term as governor and "not ruling out" a presidential run in 2028, however.
"Governor Walz is not running for the United States Senate," said Teddy Tschann, Walzβs spokesman, told Patch.
"He loves his job as governor and heβs exploring the possibility of another term to continue his work to make Minnesota the best state in the country for kids."

Walz does not plan to endorse any candidate in a primary race.
Last week, Minnesota Democratic Lt. Gov. Peggy Flanagan officially announced her candidacy for U.S. Senate.
Walz's decision not to run for U.S. Senate allows him to avoid a potentially awkward matchup against Flanagan, with whom he has had a falling out since serving as Kamala Harris' running mate in the unsuccessful presidential bid.
Rep. Angie Craig, a moderate Democrat seen as to the right of Flanagan, said she is also seriously considering a run.
Other Minnesota Democrats considering include state Attorney General Keith Ellison, Congresswoman Ilhan Omar, and state Rep. Melissa Hortman.
On the Republican side, Royce White β a former professional basketball player who lost badly to Sen. Amy Klobuchar in 2024 β has announced his candidacy.
Former Sunday Night Football broadcaster turned conservative commenter Michelle Tafoya has also said she is considering a run for the seat.
