Major I-94, I-35E Closures Begin This Week For St. Paul Bridge Repairs
Drivers in St. Paul should prepare for major detours and months of traffic disruptions.
ST. PAUL, MN — Starting this week, drivers in St. Paul can expect significant road closures as the Minnesota Department of Transportation begins repairing nine bridges over Interstate 94 and Interstate 35E.
A full replacement of the John Ireland Boulevard bridge is also scheduled to begin this fall after the Twin Cities Marathon.
The first major closure will affect eastbound I-94 from Highway 280 to I-35E beginning at 10 p.m. Friday, June 27. The interstate will reopen by 5 a.m. Monday, June 30, according to MnDOT.

Eastbound drivers will be detoured north on Hwy 280, east on Hwy 36, and south on I-35E before returning to I-94.
In addition, the Marion Street bridge over I-94 will close on July 7 and remain closed through September 26.

The project will include intermittent weekend closures and partial bridge shutdowns throughout the summer. The impacted bridges include:
- Jackson St.
- Robert St.
- Minnesota St.
- Cedar St.
- Wabasha St. N
- 10th St. W
- Western Ave. N
- Marion St.
- 5th St. ramp to I-94 westbound
MnDOT says the work is weather-dependent and subject to change. Officials are urging travelers to plan ahead, especially during busy summer events in downtown St. Paul, and to slow down in work zones.
