‘Merging Conflict’ Sparks Fatal 7-Car Pileup On I-35W

The fatal crash Tuesday morning on I-35W in Mounds View involved four passenger vehicles and three semis, according to the State Patrol.

MOUNDS VIEW, MN — A 67-year-old Brooklyn Park man was killed Tuesday morning in a seven-vehicle pileup on Interstate 35W in Mounds View, according to the Minnesota State Patrol.

The fatal crash happened at 10 a.m. in the southbound lanes near County Road I. Troopers said a "merging conflict" triggered a chain reaction among multiple vehicles.

Kirby Kyle Schwarzkopf, the driver of a 2013 Chevrolet Impala, was pronounced dead at the scene. He was wearing a seat belt, and alcohol was not involved.

Six other people suffered non-life-threatening injuries and were taken to Hennepin County Medical Center and Unity Hospital. Authorities said the crash involved four passenger vehicles and three semi-trucks.

Two of the vehicles involved had passengers who were not injured, including one of the semis and a Dodge Journey.

According to the State Patrol, the only vehicle where airbags deployed was the Dodge Journey. The roadway was dry at the time of the crash.

Responding agencies included the Mounds View police and fire departments, Ramsey County deputies, and Allina Ambulance.
