Minnesota’s Property Tax Refund: File By Aug. 15 Or Miss Out
Minnesota residents could still claim hundreds, or even thousands, but must file by the fast-approaching Aug. 15 deadline.
ST. PAUL, MN — Minnesota homeowners and renters have until Aug. 15, 2025, to file for their 2023 Property Tax Refund, the state Department of Revenue announced.
Homeowners can also claim 2024 refunds until Aug. 15, 2026.
For renters, the 2024 Renter’s Credit was claimed earlier this year when filing individual income tax returns. Those who didn’t claim it but are eligible will need to amend their returns to get the credit.

Filing tips from the Department of Revenue:
- Check eligibility: Renters and homeowners who meet certain income and property tax requirements may qualify.
- Free filing for homeowners: Use the department’s electronic system to file online at no cost.
- Two filing options for renters: File using tax software or send in a paper form.
- Include the right documents: Renters must attach a Certificate of Rent Paid from their landlord; homeowners need their county-issued property tax statements.
- Track your refund: Homeowners can check refund status through the “Where’s My Refund?” tool.
- Help for seniors: The Senior Citizens’ Property Tax Deferral Program lets eligible seniors defer part of their property taxes each year. Any refund will go toward reducing their outstanding loan balance.
The department said each return is reviewed individually, so processing times can vary.
