SHAKOPEE, MN — Nonprofit groups are keystone community organizations in the Shakopee area. Fortunately, there is no shortage of organizations to volunteer or get behind financially, and that need your help.

Here are five outstanding nonprofit groups you should know about in the Shakopee area:

1. Burnsville Community Foundation: Founded in 1998, the Burnsville Community Foundation came to be when a generous benefactor wanted to give a large sculpture to the city of Burnsville. Since then, its aim is city beautification through memorial benches, pavers, winter lighting, and more.
2. Dakota Woodlands: Previously known as Mary’s Shelter, Dakota Woodlands serves pregnant girls and women as well as single or pregnant homeless women. Community members can donate their time, money, or items to help with the effort.

3. Dodge Nature Center: The Dodge Nature Center allows residents to immerse themselves in nature and learn about animals by exploring trails through prairies, woodlands, and wetlands. Volunteers can help support the connection between the community and the natural world.
4. Mendota Heights Community Foundation: The Mendota Heights Community Foundation offers a wide array of educational and cultural services, including community engagement, environmental sustainability, and programs for kids and seniors.
5. The Open Door: The Open Door provides food to low-income people and families in Dakota County. The Open Door gave out 2.6 million pounds of food in 2022, and 64 percent of that was fresh food.
