Canterbury Park Announces $150,000 Mystic Lake Derby

"The Mystic Lake Derby will offer the largest purse ever paid at Canterbury Park and will increase next year," Canterbury CEO Randy Sampson said.

Saturday, July 28 will mark the first running of the new $150,000 Mystic Lake Derby, Canterbury Park officials announced today. The race, restricted to 3-year-olds, will be run at one mile on the turf course.

“The Mystic Lake Derby will offer the largest purse ever paid at and will increase next year as we expand our stakes schedule,” Canterbury CEO Randy Sampson said.

The overnight and stakes purse increases will be paid retroactively to opening day. Stakes purses will increase this season by $412,000.

Canterbury Park’s purses have increased by approximately 35 percent following Wednesday’s of a cooperative marketing and purse enhancement agreement between Canterbury Park and the (SMSC).

The purse structure will be enhanced by $2.6 million this season and approximately $75 million total over the next 10 years according to the terms of the agreement. When the enhancements are fully implemented, Canterbury’s purses will have more than doubled.

“The larger purses combined with our horsemen-friendly attitude will make Canterbury Park a very attractive place to race now and in the future," Sampson said.
