- Motorized Scooters can’t be used on sidewalks- According to Minnesota Law, motor scooters are not allowed on sidewalks, unless they are being used to enter the roadway from an adjacent property. With many sidewalks, especially in downtown, operators in Shakopee must stay on the road, driving with traffic. When riding on the road, motorized scooters should stay as close to the curb as possible, unless they are passing another vehicle travelling in the same direction, preparing for a left turn.
Multi-use trails and bike lanes can be used by motorized scooters. It’s the responsibility of scooter operators to be aware of other traffic in these areas including pedestrians, cyclists and other vehicles.
- Scooters must follow posted traffic signs, including stop and yield signs
- Lights are required on motor scooters- Minnesota law requires headlights and taillights on motorized scooters when road conditions require them. According to the law, those conditions are after dark, when fog or haze is present or if rain or snow is falling. Not all motorized scooters are equipped with lights, meaning these vehicles should not be operated when road conditions don’t allow.
- Operators under age 18 must wear a helmet- Wearing a helmet is important and so is wearing it properly. Helmets should fit snuggly and must be fastened correctly.
- Motorized scooter operators must be 12 years old or older- While the minimum age of operating a scooter is 12 years old, parents and guardians should ensure that operators are prepared to use their scooters safely on roads and trails.
- Safety on the road and on trails is the responsibility of the operator- Like other vehicles, operators are expected to drive safely. Unsafe handling of motorized scooters can lead to accidents with pedestrians or other vehicles. Just like a car or boat, operators should not drink and drive, should limit distractions and must remain aware of their surroundings while driving.
Following these rules, motorized scooter operators can enjoy Shakopee’s roads and trails, while protecting themselves and other drivers.
