Heat Advisory Issued for Shakopee, Twin Cities

Drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air conditioned room, stay out of the sun, and check up on relatives and neighbors.

A heat advisory is in effect from 1-8 p.m. Wednesday for most of southern Minnesota, the Twin Cities metropolitan area and portions of west central Wisconsin, according to the National Weather Service.

A much warmer and humid air mass will move into Minnesota Wednesday morning. By the afternoon, the combination of heat and humidity will create heat index values between 100 and 105 degrees.

Temperatures are expected to rise to the lower to middle 90s. The heat and humidity will increase the risk for heat-related illnesses.

Take extra precautions if you work or spend time outside. When possible, reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or evening. Know the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Wear light weight and loose fitting clothing when possible and drink plenty of water.

To reduce risk during outdoor work, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration recommends scheduling frequent rest breaks in shaded or air conditioned environments. Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location.

A heat advisory means that a period of hot temperatures is expected. Drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air conditioned room, stay out of the sun, and check up on relatives and neighbors.
