Man Charged With Assaulting Officers Gets Plea Agreement

A Bloomington man who fought and injured officers while being arrested for a verbal domestic has pleaded guilty in  and has been sentenced.

Bashir Abdullahi Mohamoud, 26, pleaded guilty to one count of felony third-degree assault, and had two counts of felony fourth-degree assault on a peace officer and one count of misdemeanor domestic assault dismissed as part of a plea agreement.

Mohamoud will spend 90 days in jail and be under supervised probation for five years for his crime. He cannot have contact with the victim of the domestic portion of the March 18 incident and must pay a $300 fine.

According to the criminal complaint:

Shakopee Police Detective Cody Horner was working at  at 10:30 a.m. when he heard a man and woman arguing down the street.

When officers went to the home, Mohamoud was allegedly yelling and swearing at a woman who was holding a child. He was refusing to leave and the woman asked officers to come inside, saying she was afraid of Mohamoud.

When Horner entered, Mohamoud swore at him, asking what Horner was going to do. When Bashir started to move toward the kitchen, Horner told him to stay where he was. As Horner approached Mohamoud with handcuffs, he said Mohamoud clenched his fists, ran at him, wrapped his arms around Horner’s waist, lifted him up and slammed him onto the arm of a couch. Horner reportedly landed on his lower back and arm, which caused intense pain.

At about this time, Scott County deputies arrived and tried to pull Mohamoud off Horner and a struggle between the four of them ensued with Mohamoud continuing to fight and swear at them, before he was handcuffed. In addition to Horner’s injury, one of the deputies suffered a swollen upper lip and bleeding lower lip.

The woman thanked officers and reportedly told him Mohamoud had been aggressive with her in the past and that his anger issues had gotten worse over time. She said he’d been calling her names all morning and was becoming progressively more agitated.

Mohamoud was convicted in 2004 of misdemeanor fifth-degree assault – causing fear.
