Shakopee Boys Lacrosse Eyeing First State Title

The Sabers play St. Louis Park in the semifinals today.

The Shakopee Boys lacrosse team is now two games away from winning its first-ever state tournament.

On Monday, June 4, the team dedicated their win against the Trinity Tartans to Sabers senior Tony Valiant, who was injured during the previous game against Grand Rapids on Saturday. In that game, the Sabers came off the field with a close win 6-5 to move onto the quarterfinals.

Monday's game against the Tartans was the best game the Sabers have put together on the field all year, according to coach Jennifer Clarke. The Tartans scored out of the gate and the Sabers attacked right back with a goal. The Sabers offense put a total of 11 goals on the scoreboard with Ryan Fitzgibonns,  Bubba Kubes, Sean Surbaguh and JD Willemssen all scoring with the help of teammates Josh Coulter and Andrew Clemens.

The Sabers have never made it into the playoffs. Tonight, they will face two-time state champion St. Louis Park at the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul. Last time they two teams met, on April 27, Shakopee won, 4-3.
