Shakopee Man Sentenced for Burglarizing Wampach's

The 21-year-old Shakopee man will spend time in prison.

Shakopee resident Joshua Michael Rollins will spend a year in prison for burglarizing Wampach's restaurant in March.

The 21-year-old pleaded guilty to third-degree felony burglary last week and had two other counts of burglary and one count of possessing burglary tools dismissed as part of a plea agreement.

Rollins was sentenced to 18 months in prison, with six months suspended. He must spend 150 days in jail but was given credit for 40 days already served. He will be on supervised probation for five years and must pay a $200 fine.

According to the criminal complaint, officers were called to  just before 2 a.m. on March 18 for a report of a burglary in which citizens had detained a suspect.

When officers arrived, they saw three people in the middle of the intersection of First Avenue and Holmes. One of them said they had seen Rollins inside the restaurant and that he fled when he realized he had been seen. One of the men chased Rollins, caught him and told him they would wait for police.

In Rollins’s pockets, police found a pair of gloves, a screwdriver, a knife, a flashlight, two rolls of dimes and about $11 in cash.

Rollins told officers he had been drinking all day and that he was homeless and hungry. He also said he planned to take food from the restaurant that he had a cream soda and a dum-dum sucker while inside for 20-30 minutes.

The owner of Wampach’s, Mary Johnson, confirmed to police the next day that someone had been in the restaurant overnight and showed them possible pry marks on the door.

She also said that about $10 was missing, that other items had been tampered with and that the same thing had happened two other times in the past week,

Rollins was previously convicted of felony third-degree burglary in 2010 and was convicted of misdemeanor theft and misdemeanor tampering with a motor vehicle in February.
