Shakopee Schools Open, Winter Weather Advisory Continues

Vehicle crashes, power outages, school closings and delays all were caused by an overnight winter storm.

Despite a storm bringing rain, sleet and snow overnight, Shakopee plows were out on the main roads early this morning.

Some Shakopee students gathering at bus stops and driving to school were more than slightly cranky about missing out on a snow day, based on their Twitter posts. A couple complained specifically about the  parking lot not being plowed.

Shakopee Superintendent Rod Thompson told the Shakopee Valley News Wednesday morning he began talking with local school superintendents, law enforcement and bus officials around 4:30 a.m. and determined the storm did not pose enough of a safety risk to delay classes.

Weather spotter Ryan Schwartz said in a tweet Wednesday morning that Shakopee received 1.5 inches of snow.

The winter weather advisory remains in effect through this afternoon. Sleet, freezing rain and rain are expected to diminish and any new accumulation will be in the form of snow – up to 2 inches around Shakopee, according to the National Weather Service – Chanhassen.

Ice accumulations of .10 to .30 inches were also possible on trees and power lines, the National Weather Service said. One report of a tree down and blocking a road crossed the police scanner at 11:15 p.m. Tuesday.

Power outages had been reported Wednesday morning in nearby cities of Eden Prairie, Bloomington and Burnsville. Xcel Energy said this morning crews are busy restoring 11,000 outages in the metro area. At 1:30 p.m. they said most customers experiencing outages should have their service restored by 11 p.m. today, but with the high number of additional outages reported, this restoration estimate could change. To report an outage, call Xcel at 1-800-895-1999.
