11-Year-Old Boy Shot And Killed In Broad Daylight At Minneapolis Park

A neighbor tried rushing the boy to the hospital before flagging down police nearby.

MINNEAPOLIS, MN — An 11-year-old boy was shot and killed Monday afternoon in a shooting at Folwell Park, according to Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara. No arrests have been made.

Officers from the Fourth Precinct responded around 2:08 p.m. to reports of gunfire at the park on Dowling Avenue North.

Preliminary details indicate that shots were fired inside the park while a vehicle drove through the area. Witnesses also reported seeing two other vehicles moving through the nearby parking lot at the time.

A short time later, a resident near Morgan and Dowling avenues heard cries for help. Outside his home, he found the wounded child and two other males. The resident placed the boy and one of the males in his vehicle and began driving to the hospital.

While en route, he flagged down an officer near Penn and Dowling.

The officer removed the boy and began lifesaving efforts, which continued with fire and EMS personnel. Despite those efforts, the boy was pronounced dead at the scene.

"I cannot emphasize enough how terrible it is to have an 11-year-old boy shot and killed in the middle of the day," Chief O’Hara said in a statement. "We are following every lead, but we need the public’s help to solve this."

The Minneapolis Police Department said it is actively investigating. The Hennepin County Medical Examiner’s Office will release the child’s name, along with the official cause and manner of death.
