5 Socialists Could Win Seats On Minneapolis City Council Tuesday

MINNEAPOLIS — Welcome to Election Day in Minneapolis. Voting at polling locations has begun for the Nov. 7 municipal election, in which all 13 city council seats are on the ballot.

Five of the 13 candidates were endorsed by the Democratic-Socialists Of America:

• Robin Wonsley for re-election to Minneapolis City Council Ward 2
• Soren Stevenson for Minneapolis City Council Ward 8
• Jason Chavez for re-election to Minneapolis City Council Ward 9
• Aisha Chughtai for re-election to Minneapolis City Council Ward 10
• Aurin Chowdhury for Minneapolis City Council Ward 12

Four of the DSA-backed candidates — Stevenson, Chavez, Chughtai, and Chowdhury — also won endorsements from the Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party.

High interest for an off-year election

Thousands of Minneapolitans have already voted early. This year’s early voting total is the second-highest Minneapolis has ever had for a municipal election, according to city officials.

As of Monday — the final day of early voting — a total of 13,422 ballots were accepted.

The only other municipal election with a higher turnout was in 2021, which included all City elected offices and ballot questions that increased voter interest, officials noted.

Any mail ballots that are delivered to elections staff on Tuesday will be added to this cycle's early vote total.
