"There aren't words to describe how tragic and senseless it is to lose a 16-year-old female over something like this," said Chief Brian O’Hara said in a news release.

"There were at least a dozen people in the immediate path of the vehicle as the suspect drove through the crowd. We are thankful because it's clear we could have had more fatalities, and more people injured. We will continue to investigate this incident, as senseless as it is, and try and determine what the motive for this could possibly be."

Police responded to 5th Street North at Hennepin Avenue at 12:23 a.m. Saturday on a report of a hit-and-run crash that injured several people.

Six people were taken to Hennepin Healthcare, where one of the injured died.

An "altercation" between a group of people occurred in the middle of the intersection, investigators said. The suspect got into a vehicle drove in reverse on Hennepin Avenue, and then drove the wrong way on 5th Street North into the crowd, police said.

The suspect drove out of downtown and was followed by witnesses. Law enforcement stopped the suspect vehicle on the 2300 block of Bryant Avenue North.
