MINNEAPOLIS, MN — One year after Officer Jamal Mitchell was killed in the line of duty, the Minneapolis Police Department is honoring his courage, sacrifice, and legacy.

On May 30, 2024, Mitchell responded without hesitation to a call for help: two people had reportedly been shot near the 2200 block of Blaisdell Avenue. While en route, Mitchell stopped about two blocks from the scene to aid two people lying in the road, believing they were the victims.

"True to his character," MPD said, Mitchell rushed toward one of them. But the person he tried to help was actually the armed suspect, who opened fire and fatally shot Mitchell.

Mayor Jacob Frey called Mitchell "the very best of Minneapolis."

"A devoted partner, a loving dad, and an officer who, even in his final moments, was willing to run toward danger to help someone else," Frey said. "His courage and selflessness will not be forgotten."

Mitchell’s name has been added to the MPD flag, joining those of other fallen officers. The department held a private ceremony Friday and plans to honor him with a formal memorial dedication. No media access was allowed at the events.
