Local Architect's Downtown Plaza Design Selected For Final Eval

Last week, East Harriet architecture firm Locus Architecture got some good news. Their design for a sun- and wind-powered sculpture for a plaza in front of the Minneapolis Convention Center was selected as one of the top 5 finalists in a design competition put on by the City of Minneapolis.

The plaza, currently a large, grassy expanse, was in need of some jazzing up, city officials concluded. They asked Minneapolis firms to 

create and install a temporary, interactive, site-specific, eco-focused “portal” to the City of Minneapolis on the Plaza of the Minneapolis Convention Center. This challenge is intended to encourage exciting proposals and thoughtful discussion about how to make our downtown more vital, dynamic, livable, walkable and environmentally friendly.

Locus beat out 11 of the 16 contestants to make the cut. Their sculpture, called "RIPPLE," and four other proposals will be evaluated over the coming weeks. A winner will be announced Feb. 27.
