Tornado Warning Issued In Minneapolis And Beyond
A tornado warning is in effect for Minneapolis and several nearby suburbs as a dangerous storm system moves through the metro Thursday.
MINNEAPOLIS, MN — A tornado warning is in effect for Minneapolis and several nearby suburbs as a dangerous storm system moves through the metro Thursday afternoon.
As of 2:30 p.m., radar indicated rotation over downtown Minneapolis, prompting the National Weather Service to issue a tornado warning until 2:45 p.m. The warning covers a densely populated area with more than 750,000 residents, including:
- Minneapolis
- Saint Louis Park
- Golden Valley
- Brooklyn Center
- Fridley
- Columbia Heights
- Coon Rapids
- Blaine
- New Brighton
- Lauderdale
- Robbinsdale
- Saint Anthony
- Mounds View
No hail is expected with this particular storm, but the tornado risk is serious. Residents in the warning area should seek shelter immediately in a basement or interior room on the lowest floor of a sturdy building.

A separate tornado warning was also issued earlier Thursday for Scott County, including Prior Lake and Elko New Market, valid until 2:15 p.m. That storm included the threat of quarter-sized hail.
The National Weather Service warns that storms across the region today are capable of producing tornadoes, large hail, and damaging winds, especially during the afternoon and early evening hours.
