Who Should Own Our Power?
Same-sex marriage and big questions about city utilities face residents Thursday.

1) Local Rabbi officiating, local same-sex couples marrying in historic first.
Wednesday night was a historic event for the Minnesota LGBT community, and Linden Hills residents Cathy ten Broeke and Margaret Miles were front and center at this historic moment when they became the first lesbian or gay couple to be legally wed in Minnesota. Mayor R.T. Rybak officiated in the main lobby of Minneapolis City Hall. They were joined—although at a later ceremony around 1 a.m. on Aug. 1—by Southwest Minneapolis' Rabbi Michael Latz, from Shir Tikvah synagogue. Latz and other faith leaders played a prominent role in getting same-sex marriage legalized in Minnesota this year.
2) Who should own our power?
Start warming up your voices and practicing your two-minute speeches—on Thursday, the Minneapolis City Council will hear residents' arguments for and against a proposal to municipalize the city's power grid. It's a move proponents say will help meet the city's renewable energy goals, but which opponents say is "reckless." The hearing takes place at 10 a.m. in the City Council chambers, on the building's third floor.
