BSM Alum Injures Spinal Cord in Boating Accident

Another member of the family is dealing with a serious spinal cord injury.

Thomas Cloyd, who graduated from BSM in 2005, sustained a severe spinal cord injury on Sunday in a boating accident while on a Wisconsin lake with friends.

According to BSM's alumni website, Cloyd's father said his son "is paralyzed from the waist down, but has use of his arms and can move his wrists. The neurosurgeon says he may recover some additional function, but the rate and extent of his recovery is unknown, and will be measured in months."

In the accident, Cloyd fractured his fifth cervical vertebrate and later underwent a six-hour surgery to remove bone fragments and stabilize his neck.

Cloyd is currently recovering and rehabbing at the Froedtert Memorial Lutheran Hospital. Yesterday, his family said on his CarePages page that Cloyd has been able to operate a wheelchair on his own and has regained a full appetite.

BSM sophomore hockey player Jack Jablonski also sustained a serious spinal cord injury during a game last December.
