Jack Jablonski, a 16-year-old sophomore at Benilde-St. Margaret's, was paralyzed by a hit he took in a hockey game last week.

Jack is a polite, unassuming and well-liked young man. I believe the sheer number of views (55,000+ at this point) on his CaringBridge website and masses of visitors at the hospital are not only an indication of the overwhelming support given to him and his family, but also a testament to his character. It's well documented that Jack is an exceptional athlete, which makes this tragic injury that much more heartbreaking. Not only because it's robbed him of his athleticism, but it's a sad reminder that no matter how young, strong or talented, no one is impervious from such a life-changing injury.

He comes from a supportive, loving and wonderful family. Mike and Leslie have raised a respectful young man, which speaks to their extraordinary parenting.  They have both been oaks during this whirlwind situation. And while my interaction with his little brother has been limited, my observations would reiterate those I've made of Jack. Max has been very strong during this time and obviously looks up to his brother. He spends as much time as he can reading the hundreds of comments from CaringBridge and Facebook pages to Jack.

As a parent I can empathize and provide as much encouragement as possible, but I can't even begin to imagine what the Jablonskis are going through. I know there is a tremendous number of people keeping this family in their thoughts and prayers, but there can never be too much. I know they cherish the collective solace and welcome all the support being shared.

I hope to once again watch Jack play hockey, baseball and tennis, but more importantly, I think we all just want to see his smiling face back at home with family and friends.
