Police Arrest Man Prowling Parked Cars in SLP

A Minneapolis man has been charged with receiving stolen property after St. Louis Park police say they caught him scoping out parked cars and carrying stolen items in his backpack.

Nathan Andrew Sibley, 19, is charged with receiving stolen property, a felony with a maximum penalty of five years in prison and a $10,000 fine.

According to the criminal complaint, signed by St. Louis Park Police Det. Matthew Reilly, a caller reported seeing people prowling parked cars just after 4:30 a.m. June 27 in the area of Hampshire Avenue and 32nd Street.

The caller said two men were peering into the windows of vehicles parked in his driveway. He said one of the men was wearing a backpack.

Police arrived and found a man wearing a backpack and matching the description provided by the caller, standing beside a parked car near Hampshire Avenue and 31st Street. Officers identified him as Sibley, and the caller identified him as the man he saw looking into car windows.

Police searched Sibley and found “multiple” stolen credit cards and a stolen Social Security card in Sibley’s pocket, and a laptop computer and a GPS unit in his backpack, according to the complaint.

The computer was determined to have been stolen from a parked car in Hopkins, and the GPS unit listed a home location in Hopkins.

Sibley is free on a $5,000 bond. An omnibus hearing in his case is scheduled for Aug. 23 in Hennepin County District Court.
