Rep. Omar Seeks $8M In Federal Funds For St. Louis Park Projects
Under the Community Project Funding program, members of Congress can request funding for projects in their districts.

ST. LOUIS PARK, MN — U.S. Rep. Ilhan Omar is seeking $8 million in federal funds for two different projects in St. Louis Park.
Omar submitted the request through the Community Project Funding program, which allows members of Congress to request funding for up to 15 specific projects in their districts. The projects must serve the public good.

Under Omar's proposal, $3,000,000 would go to the city of St. Louis Park to fund the acquisition and renovation of an affordable housing apartment building.
"This project utilizes the land-trust model to remove land costs from the project, facilitating long-term affordability," reads the proposal.

"This funding is critical to reducing the displacement of low-income households due to gentrification. Not only does this project increase accessibility to affordable housing, but also addresses climate change through energy and sustainability improvements."

"Seed the Change" capital campaign
Another $5,000,000 would be used for their "Seed the Change" capital campaign, which was created to rehab and expand their existing Family Center.
Seed the Change primarily serves woman and their children who are dealing with poverty, homelessness, and trauma.
"The requested $5,000,000 would go towards significant and necessary building upgrades," Omar's proposal reads.
"The repairs include new windows, improved security system, handicapped accessibility, new cooling and heating systems, updated classrooms, and therapy rooms. The goal of this project is to reduce any safety or health risk, improve the quality of our structures, and continue to provide adequate support and resources to our community of mothers and children."

The House Appropriations Committee said it intends to fund community projects on a limited basis in the fiscal year 2023 appropriations bills. Funding requests that address significant problems or provide a significant public good are more likely to be approved, according to officials.
