Buffalo Students Win Awards For Work On School Newspaper, Yearbook

A dozen students who worked on the student newspaper and yearbook earned individual awards from the Minnesota High School Press Association.

BUFFALO, MN β€” Several Buffalo High School students earned gold medals and many others were recently recognized for their work on the school’s student newspaper and yearbook.

Staff of the Tatanka earned first place in the yearbook theme package category for its 2020-21 issue, titled β€œSquare one.”

Six students won Gold Medallion awards from the Minnesota High School Press Association after earning first place in their categories.

St. Michael Lions Club To Host Family Fun Night June 1

Molly Hedden and Alandra Stoll earned first in the yearbook spread design for β€œSideline support”; Madelyn Anderson and Grace Bruhn earned first in the academics/club story category for β€œA-Day vs B-Day separation”; and Lindsay Hartman won the sports story category with β€œAll for one.”

Eric Lynch also earned a Gold Medallion award for finishing first in the news photo category with β€œWalkout.”

Six other students were also recognized for their work with awards from the Minnesota High School Press Association.

Claudia Staut earned second place in the yearbook academic/club story category for β€œHomemade music” and fourth place in photo illustration for β€œActivities divider.” Staut was the only Buffalo High School student to place in more than one category.

Jillian Elton and Gretta Heinecke earned third place in the yearbook spread design category for β€œA year for the books,” while Ellie Carik and Kate Mannien both earned second place in the yearbook sports story ("State snatched away") and student life story ("Speak up and take action") categories, respectively.

Alayna Mills also earned second place in the sports photo category for β€œWrestling.”

The Minnesota High School Press Association’s Gold Medallion awards honor the best individual work across seven categories. No state convention was held during the 2020-21 school year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the organization said.
