“Most prescription drug abusers say that they obtained their supply of prescription medications from friends and family,” the Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office said Thursday. “Properly disposing of prescription medication, such as opioids, can significantly decrease the likelihood of individuals having access to these highly addictive drugs.”

It can also be harmful to discard prescription drugs into the water system or landfills, as they can pollute groundwater and harm fish and wildlife, officials said.
