St. Michael-Albertville Basketball Drops Quarterfinal

The St. Michael-Albertville Knights fell in overtime to the Moorhead Spuds in the opening round of Section 8-4A boys' basketball action.

In heartbreaking fashion, the boys' basketball season came to a sudden stop.

With just a half-second on the clock, freshman Cody Dorow, who grabbed a loose ball under the Knights' basket only a moment before, hit a free-throw to send the No. 5 seed Moorhead by the fourth-seeded home team, 56-55.

The Knights, who held a 24-21 lead at the half. Moorhead came back in the second half, and thought they had the game sealed on the last possession until Michael Wiese of STMA hit a three-pointer from the elbow to tie the game and send it into overtime.

The two teams traded buckets, until the Knights held for a last-second shot with the score tied at 55.

STMA got a look, but missed. The rebound bounced to Dorow, and a whistle blew just before the horn. The referees called a foul under the basket, and Dorow was sent to the line, with the Spuds in the double bonus.

Dorow missed the first, but collected himself, dribbled, and hit the second.

The Knights got the ball in on a last second heave, but couldn't score, and the season was over.

Head coach Tim Anfenson was worried of such a scenario hours before the game.

"It's a long drive for them, but they match up really well with us. They have perimeter players who can score, and a guy down low who can score and rebound. It's pretty even," Anfesnson said.

Michael Mooney led the Knights with 17 points and seven assists. Herb Tapeh had a double-double with 10 points and 12 rebounds.

Aaron Lein of Moorhead led all scorers with 25 points.
