STMA Teen Drafted By Sioux Falls Stampede In US Hockey League

Jackson Smithknecht, a 15-year-old defenseman for the St. Michael-Albertville Knights, was selected in the seventh round of the USHL Draft.

ALBERTVILLE, MN — A 15-year-old from Albertville was drafted Monday to play for the Sioux Falls Stampede in the U.S. Hockey League.

The Stampede selected Jackson Smithknecht in the seventh round of the 2022 USHL Draft’s Phase I.

Smithknecht scored two goals and racked up four assists in 26 games during the 2021-22 season as a freshman defenseman for St. Michael-Albertville High School, according to MN Hockey Hub.

The STMA Knights finished the 2021-22 season with nine wins and 17 losses, MN Hockey Hub statistics show.

Smithknecht and other draft selections will be invited to the Sioux Falls Stampede’s tryout camp in early June, according to the team.

"We are confident and satisfied in our selections today and are excited for the future of Stampede hockey,” Riley Colvard, the team’s assistant coach and director of scouting, said in a statement.

"I am incredibly proud of the work our coaching and scouting staff has put in over the last season to build up our organization with the right talent," Colvard said. "We look forward to seeing them at camp in June.”
