ST. MICHAEL, MN — Public school teacher pay is a hot-button issue in Minnesota right now as educators in St. Paul and Minneapolis prepare to strike over salary, class sizes, mental health support and other issues.

Average teacher pay in Minnesota ranges widely by district and region, and starting salaries can be dramatically lower than what a tenured staff member earns.

Teachers in the St. Michael-Albertville Schools system made an average of $61,215 in 2021, the 184th highest average salary among Minnesota districts, according to data from the Minnesota Professional Educator Licensing and Standards Board.

The average teacher salary in the St. Paul Public School District was $85,457 — the sixth highest in the state — while the Minneapolis Public School District ranked 47th, with an average teacher salary of $71,535, the licensing board's data show.

Spectrum Charter High School in Elk River ranked 450th, with an average salary of $47,912, while Kaleidoscope Charter School in Otsego ranked 465th, with an average salary of $48,790, according to the board's data.

The state's lowest average teacher salary in 2021 was $18,194 at the Infinity: Minnesota Digital Academy, according to the board's data.
