Angry Glatt Mom Begs City Council to Stop Speeders

A driver struck a neighborhood child, Michelle Tyler said to Arnold City Councilmen.

Michelle Tyler, a 13-year resident of Glatt Drive, introduced herself as “angry mom” to Arnold councilmen during the city council meeting at at 2101 Jeffco Blvd., on April 5.

A speeder struck a neighborhood child on Glatt Drive during the last week of March, Tyler said to councilmen.

“No one called police because the driver got out of her car and said ‘Don’t call the police or you’ll pay,’ ” Tyler said about her neighbor's experience.

The child was not hurt, she said.

Tyler begged the city council to stop speeders in her Ward 4 neighborhood.

“You can hear people gunning their engines at the bottom of the hill,” she said. Drivers are moving at 40-50 mph by the time they pass her home.

The speed limit is 20 mph in her neighborhood, Tyler said.

“I feel that one of my children is going to be seriously hurt before the council will do something,” she said.

Tyler said she and her neighbors will pay for any changes that stop speeders on her street.

Tyler said she first mentioned the problem to former Mayor Mark Powell years ago. “But I only get so far,” she said.

Paul Tyler, Michelle’s husband, said he hopes the city will solve the problem before children are injured and parents take the law into their own hands.

“It’s an instant reaction,” Paul Tyler said. “Someone could end up in jail because of their temper.”

City Administrator Matt Unrein, who promised the city would immediately tackle the speeding problem, said Arnold takes small steps to control speeders in Arnold neighborhoods.

“First there is an increase in police patrols, then an increase in signs, speed humps are not the first step,” Unrein said to Tyler.

Mayor Ron Counts assured Tyler that the city would stop speeders on Glatt Drive. “We’ll do whatever it takes to ensure your family’s safety.”
