  • Do not over exercise or over work when outdoors
  • Avoid caffeine and alcoholic beverages
  • Wear light colored and comfortable clothes
  • Drink plenty of water or hydrating sport drinks

Harder said that the moment a person feels heat exhaustion he or she should seek a cool place immediately, stop all activity and drink plenty of water. If the heat exhaustion is ignored, Harder said, it could easily turn into a heat stroke. Harder said 911 should be called immediately if someone is suffering a from a heat-stroke.

Harder also asked to pay special attention to children and the elderly, as they are more sensitive to the heat.

“Obviously don’t leave your kids alone in hot areas, and limit their exposure to the sun,” Harder said. “And please check on the elderly, whether they are your friends, relatives or your neighbor down the street and make sure their AC unit is working properly.”

Harder said the Rock Community Fire House was always open to the public seeking to cool off.

“They can come in, cool off, hydrate and relax any time,” Harder said.
