The Missouri Department of Transportation will close the Holly Hills Bridge over Interstate 55 on Monday to prepare it for removal the weekend of April 15-18.

MoDOT closed the section of I-55 from Carondelet to 4500 Broadway on Friday to allow a MoDOT contractor to prepare the bridge. That I-55 section will reopen at 5 a.m. on April 18.

During bridge construction, MoDOT will close numerous I-55 lanes.

The Holly Hills and Delor Bridges were built in the early 1960s and have deteriorated beyond the point of repair, MoDOT said in a news release. New bridges will be built at the same locations, with a higher clearance above the interstate to meet current Federal Highway standards. MoDOT will also upgrade the sidewalks and pedestrian ramps to American Disabilities Act standards.

Litter Pick up along I-55 in Jefferson County on Tuesday

Elected officials, volunteers and employees of MoDOT and the Missouri Department of Conservation will pick up litter along Interstate 55 and Metropolitan Boulevard at noon on Tuesday. The event is sponsored by the two state agencies.

The activity is part of the annual No MOre Trash! Bash to keep Missouri a litter-free state. Keeping litter off roadways and out of the water is an important step towards beautiful spring and summer in Missouri, the agencies said in a news release.

In 2010, more than 12,000 volunteers and other participants collected more than 128,000 bags of trash and tons of debris throughout Missouri. MoDOT spends more than $5 million annually to remove highway litter.
