Rushing to find a cooling contractor can burn a hole in your wallet instead of keeping you cool, the Better Business Bureau (BBB) said in a news release.
The St. Louis office of the BBB said in a news release that it received 242 complaints about air conditioner repair companies last year.
Common mistakes during a heat wave are hiring the first available air conditioner repair contractor, not researching the contractor or failing to get a contract for the work to be performed.

The organization advises residents to remain calm despite the hot temperatures and carefully check the contractors’ history for complaints.
“BBB Business Reviews give consumers a lot of information on contractors and how they treat customers,” said Michelle L. Corey, BBB president and CEO. A visit to the BBB website can save customers from losing money.

The BBB recommends the following actions for customers needing their air conditioner serviced :
Research company background and licensing.
- Visit www.bbb.org for the Business Review to learn more about contractors' reputation and complaint history. Ask about companies’ licenses and about the license of the person who will work on the air-conditioning unit.
Shop around for the best price and service package.
- Get three estimates for any repair or replacement work. Never accept a verbal estimate. Get a written bid that provides an exact description of the work performed and parts used.
Check the warranty.
- Read the contractors’ warranties. Make sure to understand the conditions and terms of the contact.
Check the unit’s energy consumption.
- Owners of new, energy-efficient air-conditioning units receive for tax credits. Make sure the get the paperwork needed to declare those savings.
